What Is Cardio And Why Should You Do It? What is cardio? It’s as important to being healthy and looking good as lifting weights and does much more than just help you lose a couple of pounds! Here is a definition and ten reasons why you should cherish the idea of doing cardio. What Is Cardio? The word “cardio” is short for “cardiovascular,” a term used for the circulatory system consisting of the heart and blood vessels in your body. What people refer to when saying they “do cardio” are endurance exercises that strengthen this network. Those are done for longer stretches of time, make the heart beat faster and pump more blood through your system, which carries nutrients and oxygen to every cell. Any activity that gets your heart rate to about 5. You can roughly calculate your maximum with the formula 2. If you are forty years old, for example, it’s 2. Does it only work with specific fitness activities? As long as you get into the above range, it doesn’t matter what you do. Go for running, biking, dancing, tennis, skateboarding or whatever else you prefer. But why would we deliberately choose to do this, make our hearts beat faster and get all sweaty and exhausted? There are ten good reasons: 1. Cardio helps you lose weight. Sacred Heart Diet is a 7-day soup based fad for rapid weight loss. Also called the Sacred Heart Memorial Hospital diet. Recipes and meal plans included.Moving your body around burns more calories than just sitting in front of the television. And the faster you move, the more calories you burn. Think about it this way: If you want to lose weight and currently eat 3,0. Cardio also burns more calories than weightlifting, which consists of moving a weight for around 4. Just don’t overestimate how many calories it takes care of. That’s the downfall of many a diet. Your heart is a muscle. Especially weightlifters often don’t seem to realize this, but the heart is a muscle that needs exercise, too. Which diet is right for you? Get the facts on popular diet plans to help you decide. Previous LipoRush Review (Updated June 30, 2014): Liporush: What You Should Know LipoRush claims to be a The Waterfall Diet - Fluid Retention and Food Allergies. Lose up to 14lb in a week! If it doesn’t, it will get weaker like any other muscle. Your heart, here shown with the lungs framing it, is essentially one huge muscle. Imagine your heart like a six- cylinder engine: when it’s brand new, all six are ready for you, just waiting to put out that big roar of power. Then, for the next twenty years, you drive that motor with just two of the six cylinders, because you want to save fuel. The other four never move. That is, until you decide that after all that time you want to crank that old baby up again. Three Apple Diet Basics Just eat an apple prior to each meal. The foundation of the 3-Apple-a-Day Plan involves eating an apple before each main meal. How do you think those four long- neglected cylinders will react? A stronger circulatory system delivers more nutrients. When you do cardio, your body’s cells need more oxygen and nutrients. To keep up with this demand, it will strengthen the delivery system bringing it to them: the lungs get more capacity, the heart is able to pump more blood and the blood vessels are reinforced. For your cells, this strengthened system means that they get more nutrients delivered all the time. Where before your cardiovascular network was like a maze of narrow side streets, it is now a bunch of wide lanes where no delivery trucks get stuck in. Cardio’s stress means less stress. The other nice thing about this is that outside the times you actively do cardio, the whole system will actually have to work less: the average person has a heartbeat of around 8. It is similar to a really narrow oil pipe, that has to run under full pressure to deliver 5. A bigger pipe can deliver the same amount, but stay much below its maximum capacity, causing a lot less wear. Cardio keeps your brain younger. A study done at Boston University examined how fit people’s brains were in relation to the fitness of their hearts. People with weaker hearts had less brain volume than those of the same age whose hearts were stronger. The weaker your heart, the less blood it is able to transport and the less blood is transported, the less oxygen and nutrients may get to your brain – it will age faster. Cardio makes you a better thinker. Our brains benefit from this in another way as well: when we move, they have to process more information at once. You have to keep track of where you are going, what might be moving into your path, what that couple is doing over there on the lawn etc. When overweight children were made to exercise, their math and thinking skills improved, without any special tutoring. Simply because their brains had learned to process more information. Cardio can ease depression. Many people who suffer from serious depression have to take some serious drugs to keep it under control, but your body actually provides its own, when you let it: Running releases endorphins – hormones that enhance mood. Cardio helps against depression. This can lower the amount of medications you have to take and therefore also limit the side effects many of these drugs come with. Cardio can improve your sleep. About half of the world’s population suffers from sleep problems, either trying to fall asleep or the sleep’s quality. Here too, an ever- increasing amount of drugs is used to combat it, while just recently it was shown that obese persons taking sleeping pills have a higher risk of death. Yet once more our bodies are able to help themselves: regular cardio improves the beneficial stage 3 and 4 slow wave sleep and can make you sleep longer and let you fall asleep more easily. Even people who suffered from chronic insomnia and did just some light cardio in the evening fell asleep 5. Cardio increases bone density. Especially women when they get older suffer from an illness called “osteoporosis,” a thinning of the bone tissue and loss of bone density. If you ever saw an older lady with a stooped over back, chances are you have seen a prime example of osteoporosis. Together with strength training, cardio can increase your chances of preventing this from happening. Cardio heightens your self- confidence. Many people who lead sedentary lives feel that their bodies are more of a vehicle than a part of themselves: unreliable and only grudgingly doing what it is supposed to. Working with your body, influencing how it feels, seeing it accomplish things you willingly set it out to do – these can entirely change your perspective. Especially taken together with the other effects of cardio – the weight loss, the better sleep, the alleviation of depression – this can make an important difference to your self- confidence (PDF). Ready To Tackle It? Don’t think you have to run a marathon to benefit! It takes very little effort to (literally) start moving in the right direction! Here is a short and sweet guide on how you too can do it. Pictures courtesy of “lululemon“, Wikimedia and “lululemon“. Help me spread knowledge and share this. Having real data on your metabolism helps inform your choices, both in terms of diet and exercise. Most importantly Jennifer is there to provide advice, suggestions and encouragement, which resulted in my making meaningful progress toward my long- term health objectives. I have been a member of 2 large chain gyms. I find the experience at Timberline absolutely fabulous. I was shocked when the second time I walked in the gym for my Pilates class Timberlines’ trainers addressed me by my name and have done so ever since. Every time I am there I feel welcomed into a familiar environment and am encouraged to stick with my regimen – at the chain gyms it seemed as if the class instructors were usually out of shape (did I mention the Timberline instructors have 1. That is collectively among them.) and rarely knew your name. I have recommended Timberline to all of my friends who are looking for personal trainers or just a great gym for an overall experience. What a fun, encouraging environment for an occasional drop- in experience for a child! On a day I was particularly desperate for a workout, Dean Therriot offered to help my daughter attempt the climbing wall. These trainers really tailor make your experience and have a great sensitivity for young Moms trying to find the space for a quick workout. I joined Jennifer's program in 2. I also wanted to get a professional opinion on my eating habits. Jennifer started out the program by teaching me her approach to nutrition and healthy eating, and she did a metabolic test to figure out a realistic daily calorie goal for me. Through My. Fitness. Pal, she observed my normal eating habits for a week, and then started to suggest alternatives to various things she noticed me eating regularly. She even researched all of my favorite restaurants and helped me find healthier ways to eat at each one, and she created a personalized plan for me to reach my weight loss goals in a matter of a few months. I ended up losing over 2. Jennifer. Joining this program was definitely one of the best investments I have ever made for myself and my physical well- being. I highly recommend it, as her personalized approach and accountability system will help you reach your goals in a healthy and sustainable way. The Science Behind the Diet – Staffan Lindeberg – Food & Western Disease . Dr Lindeberg is different in that he: Why study our evolutionary diet? Author Staffan Lindeberg, MD, Ph. D, explains that (from the perspective of evolutionary biology) there are four causes of disease or symptoms: attack (as with bacteria and viruses); defense (as with a fever, in which your body is heating itself up to limit the cell division of the bacteria and virus); design error (as with choking on food–airway and gastrointestinal system are crossed); and lack of adaptability to new environment (as with insulin resistance, since we are eating more high glycemic carbs than our ancestors did). The drug companies would have you believe that every disease is a design error and needs to be fixed by a new chemical concoction. In reality, modern diseases began with agriculture. We have clearly not adapted to a diet rich in carbs and especially grains and legumes filled with anti- nutrients such as lectins and phytates. Lindeberg points out the limitations and contradictions found in scientific nutritional studies. Epidemiological research (which involves observing factors affecting the health and illness of populations) is unreliable because we cannot control all factors. Molecular biology is hard because lab animals are not biologically the same as humans. Furthermore, there are many as yet undiscovered nutrients and molecules that can impact the studies. An intervention study with a controlled trial has the flaw that people often simultaneously improve their lifestyle in other respects, such as giving up smoking or exercising more. Then there is publication bias, as studies with a positive outcome get published more often. There is funding bias, since scientists want to please those who finance their studies so they can get more work. Citation bias also occurs: drug studies get quoted much more than nutritional ones do. Then there is the influence of preconceived ideas: of course, every researcher hopes that his or her hypothesis will be confirmed. Evolutionary medicine provides an important complement to traditional scientific methods. The new study of nutigenomics looks at the effects of foods and food constituents on gene expression. It considers the diet that people evolved eating. Traditional people on their traditional diets have been observed to be free of modern day illnesses. Those that were best suited to the food that was available were the ones that had the greatest chance of surviving. Adaptation is very slow, often taking about 4. These bottles are produced from polyethylene terephthalate, also known as PET plastic, using the blow molding process. How Water Retention Causes Weight Gain. When you stand on the scale, have you ever noticed how your weight tends to fluctuate a lot depending on the time of day? Bottle labels consist of a printed, tight- fitted plastic sleeve. A resealable screw- top allows the contents to be used at various times while retaining carbonation. In the United States, the two liter bottle is one of the few cases where a product is sold by a round number of metric units. Since very few other beverages are sold in this exact quantity, the term . Other common metric sizes for plastic soft drink bottles include 5. The plastic bottle cap itself holds ~5ml. In many Eastern European countries such as Russia or Slovakia, plastic bottles are used for selling beer as well. History. The design is still used to this day by some bottlers. Most early two- liters had a separate opaque base glued to the hemispherical bottom of the clear PET flask. This base had a coaxial corrugation and drain holes. It was abolished in the 1. A dry ice bomb can be made from a two- liter bottle, water, and dry ice. Water rockets often use a two- liter bottle. Fins are attached, the bottle is partially filled with water, and air is pumped in. On release, the air forces out a stream of water which propels the rocket higher than 1. A dry ice water rocket can be made by filling a two- liter plastic bottle about one third with water, putting in some dry ice and forcefully inserting a #3 rubber stopper. Place the dry ice water rocket on its fins with the stopper pointing down or in a paper or plastic tube for firing like a mortar or bazooka. This dry ice toy amuses, but avoids the loud noise of a dry ice bomb that can often bring an unwanted police response. A funnel by cutting the bottle in half. An impromptu bee or wasp trap can be created by cutting the bottle in half and inverting the top into the bottom half where soda remains or bait can be placed. The bottom portion of early two- liter bottles could be removed from its opaque base, cut off from the top portion, inverted and then reinserted into the base. If air holes were cut in it, this would create a small greenhouse or, if left uncut, a terrarium. An empty two- liter bottle sealed with its cap is sometimes used as a bobber for fishing. Then, a link between sodium intake and high blood pressure was discovered. Certainly, to a degree, this is justified. Many diseases are worsened by excess sodium intake, and millions of Americans must closely watch the amount of sodium in their diet. However, sodium is a required element for normal body functions. It is lost in sweat and urine and is replaced in the diet. The body has a remarkable ability to maintain sodium and water balance throughout a variety of conditions, thus ensuring our survival. Ultraendurance events challenge this survival mechanism. In hot, humid conditions a large amount of sweat is lost, which can disturb sodium and water balance. Adequate hydration and sodium intake - - either via sports drinks or food - - becomes vitally important during long races. The goal of this article is to help you determine how to maintain sodium balance during training and racing and during recovery. The information for this article came from a variety of published studies done on healthy, young athletes and may not be appropriate for everyone. Athletes who are under a physician's care or have health problems should check with their doctor about salt and their ability to exercise in the heat. Hyponatremia - - what is it? Hyponatremia means a low concentration of sodium in the blood. When it occurs in triathletes, it usually happens during long or ultra- distance races in the heat but may occur anytime. It is estimated that approximately 3. Hawaii Ironman are both hyponatremic and dehydrated. The longer the race, the greater the risk of hyponatremia. What causes it? The exact mechanisms are not fully understood and I won't go into the complex physiologic pathways of sodium and water balance. The simplest answer is that lost sweat (salt and water) is replaced by ingested water (no salt). This dilutes the sodium in the bloodstream, and hyponatremia results. Longer races carry a greater risk of hyponatremia because of the total amount of sweat lost. During exercise in the heat, more salt is lost in sweat per hour than is usually replaced by food and fluids, including sports drinks. Your body can tolerate a degree of imbalance for a short period of time, but it may decompensate if this continues for too long. Sweat contains between 2. So, for a 1. 2 hour race, one could lose approximately 2. If the athlete replaces only the lost water and has minimal salt intake, hyponatremia can result. Medications and hyponatremia. Aspirin, ibuprofen, and other non- steroidal anti- inflammatory agents interfere with kidney function and may contribute to the development of hyponatremia in triathletes. The same applies to acetaminophen (Tylenol). I have seen many athletes taking these drugs during Ironman races, and I strongly recommend against this practice. They won't make you faster and may hurt you. Under tough conditions, your kidneys need to function at 1. Other drugs that may contribute to hyponatremia are diuretics, narcotics, and certain psychiatric medications. What are the symptoms of hyponatremia? The spectrum of symptoms can range from mild to severe and can include nausea, muscle cramps, disorientation, slurred speech, confusion, and inappropriate behavior. As it progresses, victims may experience seizures or coma, and death can occur. Severe hyponatremia is a true medical emergency. Treatment. Minor symptoms, such as nausea and mild muscle cramps, can be treated by eating salty foods and hydrating with a sodium containing sports drink. More severe symptoms require treatment by qualified medical personnel. If you think you are suffering from hyponatremia or are unsure, seek medical attention immediately. Recommendations. There are no clear cut guidelines, and recommendations need to be individualized for each triathlete. Some authorities recommend drinking less water to rebalance sodium and water intake. However, given the risk of dehydration and heat injury, this is not a practical recommendation. To reiterate, all of the hyponatremic athletes in the Hawaii Ironman were also dehydrated. Others recommend increasing salt intake, and this seems more prudent. By ingesting more sodium, hydration with water is balanced and dilution of blood sodium does not occur. Relative importance for different length raceslength of race less than 1 hr 1 - 3 hrs > 3 hrswater - /+ + +carbohydrate - + +salt - - /+ +It cannot be stressed enough that you have got to know what your needs are prior to race day. Rehearse your hydration, feeding, and salt strategy during your training sessions. There are so many variations between individuals that there is no single right answer. Know what your body's' needs are. Drink frequently to attempt to stay hydrated. Please note that this may not be appropriate for everyone. A Texas favorite after a hot training ride, or run, is low- fat tortilla chips (salty ones) and picante sauce (quite salty). Sodium? Undoubtedly, some of you have noticed that FDA food labels list grams (or milligrams) of sodium, and at times in this article, I have referred to grams of salt. What is the difference? Salt is made up of sodium and chloride. The FDA labels lists only the sodium content. This is because there are usually other sodium containing salts (eg. To avoid confusion, the easiest way to ensure that you have enough sodium intake is to get used to reading the FDA labels. For example to get 1 gram (1. Gatorade - - certainly impractical every hour! To get 1 gram of sodium from table salt, you would need to ingest 2. A teaspoon of salt weighs approximately 6. What about salt tablets? It is best if you strive to get your sodium from both sports drinks and salty foods - - as opposed to salt tablets - - for two reasons. Salty foods stimulate thirst, and it is possible to ingest too much salt with tablets but very difficult with food. If you don't think that your food and sports drink is providing enough sodium, then consider salt tablets. Make sure you know how much you are taking! What foods are best? Ideally, foods consumed during a long race should be low fat, low protein, high carbohydrate, and provide a source of sodium. You need water, carbohydrates, and salt to survive a long race. For convenience, I have listed a few foods and sports drinks and their respective sodium content. You'll need to experiment and find the combination that is best for you. Some fans had imagined the literary sisters speaking RP. They lost them when they went to school. Yet they never lost a sense of being outsiders, of never quite fitting in. Both their parents were strangers to Yorkshire. Their mother came from Cornwall, as did the aunt who came to help look after them after their mother died. But it was their father Patrick who really felt foreign. He had come a very long way from the mud cabin in Drumballyroney, Co Down where he had grown up in a large and very poor family, the son of a farmhand, fence- fixer and road- builder called Hugh Brunty. Their diet of porridge, potatoes, buttermilk and bread gave Patrick a lifetime of indigestion. They owned four books, and two were the Bible. At 1. 2, Patrick went to work for a blacksmith. Three years later, after a local priest found him reading to himself in a country lane . He was given an education. Within a year, he was a teacher himself. Inside a book, he wrote his name over and over, varying the spelling from Brunty to Pruty to Prunty; he was becoming someone else, and he didn. Astonishingly, he got himself to Cambridge, then ordained, and then to Yorkshire, to be the perpetual curate at the moorland village of Haworth. He was never allowed to forget he was an immigrant . This was, after all, an era in which the Irish were always being characterised as childish, lazy, primitive, dirty and alcoholic . Her first biographer Elizabeth Gaskell reinforced this, claiming to find . Later the villagers burned Branwell in effigy, a potato in one hand and a herring in the other. When Branwell started drinking, they snidely said he was reverting to type. And when Patrick was prescribed eye drops that smelled of alcohol, the gossip was so vicious that he had to carry a doctor. They were pictured, stick- thin and desperate, dressed in rags, with shocks of unkempt hair . But of the three sisters I think it was Anne who was most influenced by her father, and particularly by his sense of feeling foreign. In her debut novel, Agnes Grey, Anne describes her governess heroine arriving at her first job, far from home, like a . Instead, from the margins, she mercilessly scrutinises her callous, entitled employers. Helen arrives in a Yorkshire village wearing black and trailing mystery. Her neighbours joke that she might be a witch, and use her as a warning to their daughters not to . Helen is a fugitive, who has broken the law by leaving her husband. He was abusive, not just to her but to her young son, but in Victorian England, she would never have got a divorce, let alone custody of their child, so she has to flee in the night. But he told her to leave, even though it was illegal, even though society might shun her. They had split from the related Aleut group about 4,0. Siberian migrants, possibly related to the Chukchi language group, still earlier. They spread eastwards across the Arctic. Collins determined that, based on the ruins found at Native Point, the Sadlermiut were likely the last remnants of the Dorset culture, or Tuniit. The Nunatukavummuit people usually moved among islands and bays on a seasonal basis. They did not establish stationary communities. In other areas south of the tree line, Native American and First Nations cultures were well established. The culture and technology of Inuit society that served so well in the Arctic were not suited to subarctic regions, so they did not displace their southern neighbors. Inuit had trade relations with more southern cultures; boundary disputes were common and gave rise to aggressive actions. Warfare was not uncommon among those Inuit groups with sufficient population density. Inuit such as the Nunatamiut (Uummarmiut), who inhabited the Mackenzie River delta area, often engaged in warfare. The more sparsely settled Inuit in the Central Arctic, however, did so less often. Their first European contact was with the Vikings who settled in Greenland and explored the eastern Canadian coast. The Norse sagas recorded meeting skr. During this period, Alaskan natives were able to continue their whaling activities. But, in the high Arctic, the Inuit were forced to abandon their hunting and whaling sites as bowhead whales disappeared from Canada and Greenland. These were areas which Native Americans had not occupied or where they were weak enough for the Inuit to live near them. Researchers have difficulty defining when Inuit stopped this territorial expansion. There is evidence that they were still moving into new territory in southern Labrador when they first began to interact with Europeans in the 1. Postcontact history. Canada. Early contact with Europeans. The lives of Paleo- Eskimos of the far north were largely unaffected by the arrival of visiting Norsemen except for mutual trade. By the mid- 1. 6th century, Basque whalers and fishermen were already working the Labrador coast and had established whaling stations on land, such as the one that has been excavated at Red Bay. Martin Frobisher's 1. Northwest Passage was the first well- documented post- Columbian contact between Europeans and Inuit. Frobisher's expedition landed in Frobisher Bay, Baffin Island, not far from the settlement now called The City of Iqaluit which was long known as Frobisher Bay. Frobisher encountered Inuit on Resolution Island where five sailors left the ship, under orders from Frobisher, and became part of Inuit mythology. The homesick sailors, tired of their adventure, attempted to leave in a small vessel and vanished. Frobisher brought an unwilling Inuk to England, possibly the first Inuk ever to visit Europe. While there are some allegations that Inuit were hostile to early French and English explorers, fishers and whalers, more recent research suggests that the early relations with whaling stations along the Labrador coast and later James Bay were based on a mutual interest in trade. The Moravian missionaries could easily provide the Inuit with the iron and basic materials they had been stealing from whaling outposts, materials whose real cost to Europeans was almost nothing, but whose value to the Inuit was enormous and from then on contacts in Labrador were far more peaceful. Nonetheless, Inuit society in the higher latitudes had largely remained in isolation during the 1. The Hudson's Bay Company opened trading posts such as Great Whale River (1. Whapmagoostui and Kuujjuarapik, where whale products of the commercial whale hunt were processed and furs traded. The British Naval Expedition of 1. Parry stayed in what is now Igloolik over the second winter. Parry's writings, with pen and ink illustrations of Inuit everyday life, and those of George Francis Lyon, both published in 1. Unlike most Aboriginal peoples in Canada, however, the lands occupied by the Inuit were of little interest to European settlers . Southerners enjoyed lucrative careers as bureaucrats and service providers to the north, but very few ever chose to visit there. Canada, with its more hospitable lands largely settled, began to take a greater interest in its more peripheral territories, especially the fur and mineral- rich hinterlands. By the late 1. 92. Inuit who had not been contacted by traders, missionaries or government agents. In 1. 93. 9, the Supreme Court of Canada found, in a decision known as Re Eskimos, that the Inuit should be considered Indians and were thus under the jurisdiction of the federal government. Native customs were worn down by the actions of the RCMP, who enforced Canadian criminal law on Inuit, such as Kikkik, who often could not understand what they had done wrong, and by missionaries who preached a moral code very different from the one they were used to. Many of the Inuit were systematically converted to Christianity in the 1. Siqqitiq. Second World War to the 1. One of the more notable relocations was undertaken in 1. Port Harrison (now Inukjuak, Quebec) to Resolute and Grise Fiord. They were dropped off in early September when winter had already arrived. The land they were sent to was very different from that in the Inukjuak area; it was barren, with only a couple of months when the temperature rose above freezing and several months of polar night. The families were told by the RCMP they would be able to return within two years if conditions were not right. However, two years later more families were relocated to the High Arctic and it was to be thirty years before they were able to visit Inukjuak. Laurent publicly admitted, . In the 1. 95. 0s, the Canadian government began to actively settle Inuit into permanent villages and cities, occasionally against their will (such as in Nuntak and Hebron). These forced resettlements were acknowledged by the Canadian government in 2. The nomadic migrations that were the central feature of Arctic life had become a much smaller part of life in the North. The Inuit, a once self- sufficient people in an extremely harsh environment were, in the span of perhaps two generations, transformed into a small, impoverished minority, lacking skills or resources to sell to the larger economy, but increasingly dependent on it for survival. Although anthropologists like Diamond Jenness (1. Inuit culture was facing extinction, Inuit political activism was already emerging. Cultural renewal. In the 1. 96. 0s, the Canadian government funded the establishment of secular, government- operated high schools in the Northwest Territories (including what is now Nunavut) and Inuit areas in Quebec and Labrador along with the residential school system. The Inuit population was not large enough to support a full high school in every community, so this meant only a few schools were built, and students from across the territories were boarded there. These schools, in Aklavik, Iqaluit, Yellowknife, Inuvik and Kuujjuaq, brought together young Inuit from across the Arctic in one place for the first time, and exposed them to the rhetoric of civil and human rights that prevailed in Canada in the 1. This was a real wake- up call for the Inuit, and it stimulated the emergence of a new generation of young Inuit activists in the late 1. Inuit and their territories. The Inuit began to emerge as a political force in the late 1. They formed new politically active associations in the early 1. Typical boot camp workouts combine intense aerobic exercise with muscle- building, resistance exercises, and challenges that boost flexibility and coordination. The vigorous, fast- paced regimen spikes your heart rate so you burn a high number of calories. Daily boot camp training burns fat and builds muscle, increasing weight loss and supporting maintenance of a healthy weight. Consult your doctor before starting an intense boot camp regimen for weight loss. Select a boot camp program at a challenge level that suits your goals. To lose weight, you want a boot camp that features a significant amount of cardiovascular activity. A minimum of 1. 50 minutes of moderate to vigorous aerobic exercise per week works best. In boot camp workouts, the cardiovascular activity takes the form of sprinting, jumping rope, dashing up long flights of stairs, navigating an obstacle course or doing calisthenics like jumping jacks and burpees. A boot camp workout should also strengthen your upper body, core and lower body muscle groups. Hit multiple muscles, tendons and joints with compound exercises such as lifting a dumbbell while doing deep squats, or doing triceps extensions paired with lunges. Hardcore muscle- building challenges in back- to- basics training programs include dragging bags of sand across a field or over a hill. Exercises such as pushups, pullups, abdominal crunches while bicycling your legs, squat jumps and burpees strengthen your whole body. The muscle you gain replaces fat, raising your resting metabolism so that you burn more calories around the clock. The varied exercises in a boot camp provide an interval- training workout. The idea is to raise your heart rate with a speed interval or an intense activity for anywhere from 3. Then you reduce your pace to rest for up to one minute. You spend the next few minutes doing a moderate to vigorous activity before engaging in another speed interval. Maximize your calorie- burning benefits by sprinting rather than running over a hill, kicking higher during martial arts moves or doing deep squat jumping jacks rather than traditional jumping jacks. As you lose weight, you burn less calories doing the same boot camp exercises. To keep losing weight, add challenges to your boot camp regimen. Lengthen your speed intervals or shorten your rest period. Add more cardiovascular movement to your boot camp regimen or work out longer. Use heavier weights when doing strengthening activities. If you race- walk, jog or run as part of your boot camp program, use a hillier route or one with a steady uphill grade. I need to finish the job and get seriously ripped! I went down to 9st 1.
